A 30-day truce that the United States has suggested to halt the war in Ukraine would provide Russia “nothing” while giving Kyiv’s forces much-needed battlefield relief, according to President Vladimir Putin’s senior foreign policy advisor on Thursday.
Three years after pouring tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine’s neighbor in a war that US President Donald Trump has promised to resolve, Russian forces have been advancing since mid-2024 and now hold about a quarter of Ukraine’s territory.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, arrived in Moscow Thursday for negotiations. According to Russian authorities, Russia was prepared to examine the ceasefire proposal after US national security advisor Mike Waltz gave information on it on Wednesday.
