As the last group was reading their putts, a group of six climate demonstrators ran on to the 18th green, interrupting the end of the final round.
Some wore t-shirts with the phrase “No golf on a dead planet” emblazoned on them, and others detonated smoke bombs that rained powder onto the putting area.
The audience shouted “USA, USA, USA” as they were led away by the police from the TPC River Highlands course in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Five minutes or so later, play started again, and Scheffler just missed a birdie putt that would have sealed the win and sent South.
The organizers altered the hole location on the green while the powder was cleaned because the extra holes were supposed to begin on the eighteenth.
After Kim was unable to recover from a plugged lie in a greenside bunker, Scheffler won on the opening play-off hole with a par, making history as the first player to win six times before July since Arnold Palmer in 1962.
“It’s quite unique,” Scheffler remarked. “I’ve had a terrific season, a lot of fun, and I’ve been lucky to come away with some wins.
“Tom gave it everything he had. It was enjoyable to battle with him because he is a fantastic player and champion.”
