ISLAMABAD: Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan was instructed by the Supreme Court on Monday to address the concerns raised by the families of the May 9 suspects, who claimed that they had not been able to meet the detainees.
The directive was given during the hearing on the intra-court petitions against the military tribunals’ trial of civilians implicated in the May 9 events of the previous year.
The hearing was presided over by a seven-member bench led by Justice Aminuddin and consisting of Justices Jamal Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Hassan Azhar Rizvi, Shahid Waheed, Musarrat Hilali, and Irfan Saadat Khan.
“The relatives claim that they haven’t been having meetings with the inmates. The SC order stated that the attorney general ought to handle these allegations.
The hearing was then postponed until July 11 by the court.
Following objections to the six-member panel, the top court in May submitted the case to the Procedure Committee for a rebuilding of the bench.
Khawaja Ahmad Hasan, the attorney for the petitioner, former chief judge Jawad S. Khawaja, had objected on the bench, stating that a larger bench should be formed in view of the memo from Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Yahya Afridi.
A six-member wider bench was dissolved on January 29 when Justice Tariq Masood saved himself from hearing intra-court arguments against civilians’ trials in military court.
