The Swedish-Georgian writer-director of And Then We Danced, Levan Akin, makes a comeback with Crossing, a gritty yet poignant LGBT story. Lia (Mzia Arabuli), a retired teacher from Batumi, Georgia, journeys to Istanbul, Turkey, in quest of her estranged transgender niece. She is the film’s seventy-something heroine. She learns about a community she was unaware of and is shown here with the vivid authenticity of a documentary and the depth of a novel, thanks to the assistance of a transgender rights lawyer (Deniz Dumanli).
“Akin effectively transports viewers to the vibrant capital of Turkey,” remarks Hannah Strong in Little White Lies. “Sweet without being cloying, it’s a love letter to the commonalities between Georgian and Turkish culture; one that encourages empathy and reminds us it’s never too late to change for the better.”
There is no other slasher movie franchise like Ti West’s “X” series. Mia Goth portrayed Maxine Minx in the 1979 film X, an aspiring adult film star who makes it through a bloodbath on a Texan farm. Next was Pearl, which also starred Goth as a younger version of the antagonist from the first movie and took place in 1918.
