Amy Yang of South Korea won her maiden major championship by winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
At Seattle’s Sahalee Country Club, the 34-year-old had a two-shot lead heading into the final round and was seven clear after 15 holes.
She shot a level-par 72 to finish on seven under, three strokes ahead of American Lilia Vu, Japanese player Miyu Yamashita, and compatriot Jin Young Ko despite bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes.
Yang was playing in her 75th major, which was the longest wait for a first-time winner since Angela Stanford’s 76th-place finish in the 2018 Evian Championship.
Yang, the runner-up at the US Women’s Open in both 2012 and 2015, stated, “I’m lost for words right now.”
Before I retired, I began to doubt my ability to win a major, so I’m quite grateful and thrilled to have done so.
“All four rounds were tough out there, but I just trusted what I prepared and I did my best all week.”
With a birdie at the first and two more before the turn, Yang got off to a great start in her final round.
She bogeyed the 10th, but she was able to pull clear with to birdies at the 11th and 13th.
Charley Hull of England tied for 16th after a closing 74, while Leona Maguire of Ireland finished 24th after rounds of 75 and 76 over the weekend.
