TBILISI/BAKU: In a dramatic turn-around in a tumultuous and frequently acrimonious peace process, officials from Armenia and Azerbaijan announced Thursday that they had reached a consensus on the terms of a peace deal to put an end to the South Caucasus countries’ nearly forty-year-old conflict.
Since Nagorno-Karabakh, a part of Azerbaijan with a predominantly ethnic Armenian population at the time, broke away from Azerbaijan with Armenian assistance in the late 1980s, the two post-Soviet nations have been engaged in a number of wars.
In a statement released on Thursday, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry stated that it had finalized a draft peace deal with Azerbaijan.
