Following a landslide in the Fontana area of the Maggia valley in the Italian-speaking state of Ticino, on the southern side of the Swiss Alps, three people’s bodies were found.
Early on Sunday morning, the body of a man whose partner had reported him missing was discovered in a hotel in the ski town of Saas-Grund. It’s thought that the floodwater surprised him.
Another man has not been seen since Saturday night in the Binn area of the upper Rhone valley near the Italian border, according to the police.
In the meantime, inhabitants and vacationers have been evacuated from their houses as wildfires in the Turkish province of Izmir and the vicinity of Athens have been started by intense winds and scorching temperatures.
Heavy rains have impacted Switzerland’s western and southern regions. A portion of the Visletto road bridge collapsed, and campers along the River Maggia have been evacuated.
There is one individual reported missing in the Lavizzara valley nearby.
A road and railroad line were inundated when the River Rhone overflowed its banks in various regions of the state of Valais, to the north.
